What Do We Do?

Our teams and platforms enable Comcast’s 22 million customers to discover the content they love across TV, web, mobile and tablet devices. A core part of the Technology & Product organization, we develop the advanced content analysis algorithms and infrastructure that power the entertainment experiences of the future, from search, browse and recommendations to a voice interface for the TV that allows you to search for titles, actors, themes, and quotes.

Our work spans the research, development, testing and operations that deliver personalized and magical content discovery experiences to our X1 customers and beyond. Throughout our pipeline, we place a heavy focus on R&D that transforms TV and smart home experiences, using technologies such as machine learning, natural language understanding, computer vision and deep learning. To deliver our services to millions of subscribers, we invest in cutting edge technologies and approaches to distributed computing and big data challenges. In a nutshell, we innovate – at scale.

Comcast Labs is an integral part of the company’s innovation focus.

Our technical teams are part of the CoMPASS organization with other offices in Philadelphia and Denver. The CoMPASS organization is responsible for the cloud-based platform that powers Comcast’s video applications with content metadata, customer information, and content discovery services. For example, our services tell our customers what is on TV tonight, provide them with the descriptions, ratings, cover art and credit for each live, dvr, or video-on demand program, and manage what subscriptions a customer has and is entitled to watch, which mobile devices are registered with their credentials, and much more. Working in close cooperation with our partner teams within CoMPASS and beyond allows us to innovate across all of Comcast’s products and maximize the impact of our daily work.

A lot of people want to know what our office environment is like. Our offices are located a few blocks down from the White House and surrounded by many of DC’s best restaurants, parks, and major metro lines.

We are part of a huge corporation but have the advantage of operating like a startup.  We hold Lab weeks and hackathons, and give our employees a chance to form teams to work on emerging technologies and experimental products. The office has a semi-open floorplan with ample individual work spaces, collaboration areas, plenty of natural light, a large break room (ping pong or foosball anyone?) and a fully stocked café/kitchen.
